Death
Harriett Furr was born Sept. 10, 1906 in the Oklahoma Territory prior to Oklahoma becoming a state. The closest location today would be Norman, Okla. She passed away November 1, 2005 at the home of her family after a brief illness. When Harriett started working she lived in St. Louis and became a floor supervisor for Bell Telephone with over 100 operators under her supervision. In 1927 she married 0. Kent Furr who predeceased her in 1982. They had a son, Dick Furr who with his wife Pat lives in Chico. One of Harriett's greatest joys was in establishing a library in McCamey, Texas, where the family lived from 1941 to 1953. Through hard work she learned the skills of a librarian and developed a library that was a model for that part of the state. After leaving McCamey the Furrs purchased a small telephone company in Southern Missouri and transformed the rural switchboard phone company with party lines to a modern day dial service for the entire county. After retirement Harriett and Kent lived in Sun City, Ariz., until settling in Chico in 1974. Harriett was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Christopher, and her brother, Bert Larkin. Service for Harriett shall be held later in the year when all her family joins together for a fond farewell in Mississippi. Harriett is survived by her two grandchildren, Mark Furr and Lisa Furr; two great-grandchildren, Tarryn Furr and Erica Furr, and two nieces Joan Lankford and Joyce Cook. Harriett was an independent and capable person and will be missed by all of her family and friends. She said that by living to be 99 she has set a new bar for all of the family to reach.Endnotes
