Glynn Hope "Poe" Carpenter

Mr. Glynn Hope "Poe" Carpenter, 87, of Booneville, Arkansas died Monday, February 14, 2011 at the Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Hamburg; a resident of Booneville for the past 14 years and a former resident of Forrest City and Mena for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He began his electric utility career in 1946 in Hamburg with Mid-South Construction Company and later worked with an engineering firm in Hamburg and Hugo, Oklahoma. He worked for the Ashley Chicot Electric Cooperative in Hamburg for 11 years as a work order clerk, lineman, line foreman and power use advisor. His career took him to Rich Mountain Electric Cooperative in Mena where he served as general manager for eight years. He retired as president and chief executive officer of Woodruff Electric Cooperative at Forrest City, having served in that position from 1969 until 2003. Altogether, he worked for the electric cooperative system for nearly 53 years. Mr. "C", as he was often called by his employees and friends, will be remembered fondly for his encouragement and development of many young employees in the electric cooperative industry.
Mr. Carpenter represented Arkansas on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's board of directors for 20 years and served on the Federal Rural Electric Insurance Exchange for 12 years. He was a director and former chairman of Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation and Arkansas Electric Cooperative, Inc. He was a past president of the Mena and Forrest City Chambers of Commerce, the Arkansas Rural Electrification Council, the Mena Lions Club, Forrest City Rotary Club, Booneville Kiwanis Club and Polk County Rural Development Council. He was a former board member of the Forrest City Memorial Hospital; Mena School Citizens Advisory Committee, Booneville Community Hospital, Booneville Chamber of Commerce and the Logan County Housing Authority. His last employment was with Century 21 Real Estate of Booneville. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, KCCH, a Master Mason of Booneville Blocher Masonic Lodge #247, a past Master Mason of the Promise Land Masonic Lodge, a member of Hamburg Masonic Lodge #465 and a member of the Booneville Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former Deacon of the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church in Hamburg, First Baptist Church of Forrest City, Landmark Baptist Church of Forrest City and Mena First Baptist Church. He was currently an active Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Booneville and he was involved in many other community activities.
He is preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby Carpenter; his parents, John & Lala Emory Carpenter; a brother, Quinton Carpenter and three sisters, Imogene White, Louise Thompson and Ruth Threlkeld.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mildred White Carpenter; a son, Billy Glynn Carpenter; a granddaughter, Kelly Jane Carpenter all of Booneville; three brothers, Oliver, James and Doyle Carpenter all of Hamburg and a sister, Nathalee Moore of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Reese, Rev. Carlton White and Rev. Dan Bonnette officiating. Pallbearers are Ronald White, Bucky Carpenter, Frankie White, Jimmie Bonnette, Mike White and Robert Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers are Charles "Bull" Wells, Dewey "Scutter" Kilcrease, Don Kelley, Norval Lee Cecil, Steve Collins, Larry Collins, Dale Lauhon, Billy Kelley, Leon White, Herald Dean Bonnette, Jimmie Kelley, Roger White, George E. White, Willard Erwin, Gerald Lauhon and Jack Shell. Burial will be in the Promise Land Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Promise Land Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. JoAnn Sullivan, 318 Ashley 131 Road, Hamburg, AR or to the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, 765 Ashley 70 Road, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
