George Zarafonetis was a graduate of Texas Technological College at Lubbock. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Dallas, but often attended the First Presbyterian Church at Hillsboro. When he enlisted in February 1942, he was an employee of the oil and gas division of the Railroad Commission of Texas at Corpus Christi. He hoisted the first American flag over Africa when Allied troops landed at Algeria in November, 1942. He died 11 months later in an automobile accident near Arzeu, Algeria. He was survived by his father, one brother, and two sisters.
