John Salatas

(4 Jul 1904 - 10 Dec 1988)

Spelling of Saladis from his niece, Marie Ceccacci to Carol Petranek, November 10, 2020.

Name from Nick Pappas, letter dated Jan. 5, 1996 in possession of Carol Petranek.
Nicholas J. Pappas Personal History, January 1999 (in possession of Carol Kostakos Petranek) states that during a trip to Greece in May 1981, "from Sparta we drove to Corinth and to Souli, brother-in-law John Salatas' hometown. John, the oldest son, emigrated to New York for the express purpose of helping his family in Souli, and that he did. The home his brother was living in, and where John's mother had lived before her death, was very nice and full of nice furniture and plush rugs. The grape arbors that the family owned covered many acres and were very well tended. At one time they dried their grapes and sold them as raisins, but now they said buyers came from Athens and bought the total output as eating grapes. I don't know how much of what we saw was due to John's continued monetary support, but I believe a good share of it could be attributed to him."

NOTE: John's arrival in the US in 1920 was with his uncle, Panagiotis and his cousin, Georgios. If I can find further records on them, they need to be entered into FamilySearch and RootsMagic.

He worked in the Pappas Restaurant.
