News article
Three Brothers Are Reunited at Home of Their Ill MotherAfter three years of separation, during which they fought on distant fronts, the thre LaRicos brothers of Baltimore have been reunited. All received special leaves for a visit with their mother, Mrs. George LaRicos, of 3210 Mondawmin Avenue, who is ill.
The eldest of the brothers is First Lieutenant John LaRicos, a veteran of two years' service with the Quartermaster Corps in the Mediterranean theater. He arrived in time to greet his two younger brothers, Chief Petty Officer Peter LaRicos, of the United States Maritime Service and Technical Sergeant Deno LaRicos, who is attached to the army air force in the South Pacific.
In Pacific Zone 3 Years (Peter LaRicos)
Flown to the United States from Saipan, Sergeant LaRicos made the trip in two days and a few hours. The 25-year-old City College graduate, who has served in the Pacific zone for three years and has lost 12 of his closest friends during that period, found it difficult to adjust himself to the tone of life in Baltimore. Civilian complaints about wartime shortages, such as the scarcity of meat, sound strange to a soldier who has lived on war rations, without variety, for countless days, he explained.
Finds Friends Gone (Deno LaRicos)
Lieutenant LaRicos, formerly assistant manager of the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, found that most of his friends had left for overseas stations during his absence. In the Mediterranean area he helped work out supply problems in the North Africa campaign. Recently, through no desire of his own, he has been transferred to the military police. Petty Officer LaRicos, who has been shuttling back and forth across the Atlantic for two years on convoy duty, wasn't proud of the wartime changes he fund in his home town. "Of course, I realize I'm talking about my home, but Baltimore leaves the impression of being more interested in the serviceman's money than in the man himself," he asserted. In particular, he criticized taxi-cab drivers and night-club proprietors who are "money mad." In other nearby cities, the motorists slow down and ask the men in uniform if they would like a ride. In Baltimore one doesn't find such courtesy," he said.
