Maria Plevritis, 70; operated grocery
The American Dream brought Maria and James Plevritis from a small Greek town to Chicago, a series of factory jobs and finally their own grocery store--and a second one they started so their sons could be self-employed. Mrs. Plevritis died Monday at her Belmont Central home after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 70.
The former Maria Zaharakis grew up in St. John Theologo near Sparta, Greece. One of her brothers had a friend named James Plevritis in a nearby small town. They met at a festival in Sparta, courted, then married in 1954. The eldest of their three sons, Paul, was born the next year. In 1956, the family moved to Chicago where Mrs. Plevritis' brother Peter had settled and they had two more sons.
In the early days, Paul Plevritis said, "my father worked at National Baking Co., and my mother worked at Hart Schaffner and Marx. She was a seamstress. She used to alter men's jackets at the factory, fixing other people's mistakes." Next, Mrs. Plevritis worked on the production line at the old Zenith plant on Austin, soldering transistors in television sets, a job she found nerve-racking. In 1967, they bought a small building at 6050 W. Diversey and opened the Spartan grocery store, doing business in front of the building and living in a small ground-floor apartment behind it. They prospered, bought a house 100 feet down the alley and, in 1974, expanded the store into all of the original building. They closed the store in 1982, thinking of retiring to Greece, Paul Plevritis said, "but I guess they got bored. Also, my brothers and I wanted to go into business for ourselves, and they wanted to help the family continue the business."
John was repairing radiology machines, Ted was a banquet waiter, and Paul was a Dominick's store manger when their parents opened Spartan Brothers grocery store on Harlem a few doors south of Touhy in 1989. The brothers all went to work at the store, specializing in Greek imports, American meats and cooking meats for parties.
"My mother loved to do things for her house in her spare time, sewing and embroidering tablecloths and dresser scarves," Paul Plevritis said. "She loved to cook and bake and make different kinds of desserts. Everything she made was good."
Mrs. Plevritis regularly attended Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 6041 W. Diversey, one block from her home. "She wouldn't move because the church was so close to the house, and she didn't drive," her son said.
In addition to her husband and three sons, survivors include three brothers, Panagiotis, Dimitrios and John Zaharakis; two sisters, Demetra Salaris and Pota Skliris, and five grandchildren.
Services were Thursday at Holy Trinity with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
