Note1841Robert Ireland emigrated to NSW in 1841 aboard the S.S. "Agnes" with his parents. He understated his age (birth date given as 5 Oct 1829 - age 14) possibly to reduce the bounty payable, which was levied at 10 pounds up to the age of 14 - more if older. His stated occupation was "shepherd". He was to be employed by Mr G Burke of Clarence River, NSW and his wages were to be set at 13 pounds (not including rations) for a certain term. Robert was employed as a tailor in Sydney up until his death in 1902. Robert's headstone reads: "George Ireland 5th August 1899 aged 45 also Robert Ireland Beloved father of the above died 4th May 1902 aged 74 years
Immigration (fam)-sharedOct 1841(George IRELAND and Elizabeth MCGUFFIE) emigrated to NSW on the "Agnes" together with their 7 children, arriving on 13 Feb 1842. George & Elizabeth lowered their age as people over 40 didn't attract the emigrant bounty. They also lowered the age by 2 years of most of their children & their eldest son, Alexander, pretended to be George's brother. This was quite common
