General Russell Hastings
(30 May 1835 - 18 Sep 1904)
General Hastings served as President Hayes' aide-de-camp during the Civil War. He displayed great courage in combat and was severely wounded at the Battle of Opequon. He was breveted brigadier general of volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was elected a member of the Ohio legislature, and while serving, was appointed U.S. Marshall for the northern district of Ohio. Owing to ill health, he resigned in 1874. Later, following his second marriage, he went to Hamilton, Bermuda, making a home at "Soncy", where he grew lilies for the New York market.
