A photograph of Charles L. Mead, made in the 1870's, resembled so much Rutherford Hayes, Jr. (his great-uncle) at the time of his death in 1822, that it could have passed for the latter's portrait. No photograph of the President's father, Rutherford Hayes Jr. was know to exist.
