Jacob ETTER
(15 November 1797 - 28 April 1874)
Jacob Sr. married Susan Miller. He recieved a $2,000.00 dowery for marring her. they had 10 children. Susan and Jacob Sr. passed through a fair siege of years of the "War of Rebellion" from 1860- 1864. The Union army camped on the farm where they were living. The army caused quite a disturbance about the premises. It was so much so that they had to have a guard placed about the place for their protection. Jacob Sr. became vexed and complained about their abuses. The officers thought Jacob Sr. was a Rebel sympathizer and advised him to put a Union flag on his house. The flag was seen waving for weeks to show the army that he was a Union man. When the Rebel army made their raid through the valley for Gettysburg, the flag had to come down again for safety's sake. The Rebel army passed through their farm lands to get to Gettysburg. The Rebel army was defeated and passed back again in about a day and a half. Their son Jacob Jr. was on the battlefield after the battle was over to help bury the dead. He stated that the horses and men still laied were they had been shot, awful sight to see.
