Maggie had moved to Juniata to live with her half-sister, Mrs. George Breitweiser, sometime after 1878. She was the youngest of a family of 15 brothers and sisters and half-brothers and sisters, the children of Samuel Blank and his two wives, Veronica Umble Blank and Lovina Massey Blank (Maggie's mother.)

She left Lancaster on January 2, 1878, with her half-sister, Mrs. George Manche. They lived for a time in Illinois and the following year they moved to Concordia, Kan., later moving to a homestead near the present town of Glen Elder. From there, she went to live with another half-sister, Mrs. George Breitweiser of near Juniata.
