Obituary
Jon Stanley Hargleroad1936 - 2018
March 5, 1936 - June 14, 2018
Stan Hargleroad-–husband, father, stepfather, grandpa, and friend-–passed away peacefully at home in La Jolla, CA at age 82 of advanced prostate cancer.
Born in Hastings, NE to James Clayton Hargleroad and Beulah Deems Hargleroad, Stan spent his early years in Tekamah, NE. He attended Tekamah High School, where he played football and basketball, and ran track. While earning his BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of Nebraska, Stan was a member of the Farmhouse fraternity and ROTC, and met his future wife, Barbara Breunsbach. After serving in the US Army and working for the Atomic Energy Commission in the 1960's, a job at Litton Industries brought the family to the San Fernando Valley. They joined the First Presbyterian Church of Encino and raised three children. When Barbara passed away in 1978, Stan became a single father. After six years, he married Elizabeth (Liz) Beacham Kelm, a fellow long-time church member, and their family expanded to six children. He continued to work as an Aerospace Engineer for Lear Siegler until his retirement in the late 1980's.
Stan was proud of his Nebraska heritage, and of his resourceful single mother. He enjoyed coaching his boys' athletic teams, rooting for the LA Dodgers, tending his extensive vegetable garden, nurturing the church roses, volunteering at the interfaith food pantry, and picnicking at the Hollywood Bowl.
Known for his big smile and welcoming "Hey!" to all who walked through the door, Stan enjoyed the beauty and collegiality of their home since 2014 at White Sands of La Jolla. Stan was predeceased by his wife Barbara, sister Jean Andersen, and brother James "Buzz" Hargleroad. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Hargleroad; children Jeffrey (Terri), Gregory, and Elizabeth Lee (Kam Golpariani); stepchildren Claire (Joe Giammarco), Robert (Linda), and John (Eliza Chang) Kelm; and 13 grandchildren, as well as in-laws, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Stan is greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 14 in the chapel at White Sands of La Jolla, CA. Donations in Stan's memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Encino, CA, or to the charity of your choice.
