The above site has some great information on this Putnam / Putman line.

Margaret Burnhart maiden name found on death record for Monroe Putnam.
Barna is spelling found on Headstone for Barney.

More research is needed to determine Father and Mother with sources to validate.
A fourth child is listed on 1850 census showing a Female child name of Hannah. In 1860 census the fourth child is listed as Mary. More research is need here for her.
In New York, State Census 1855 it shows a child Mary H. Putnam with a note next to her name of "adopted" it appears.

DearArthur,

Thanksfor your request. If you haven't already, please take a look at ourOnline Records Database for possible leads. This database has indexesand some transcribed references in full, but no attached documents.Depending on the reference, there may be more information available,so please ask. Additionally, tinker with www.fultonhistory.com,which has a large, searchable collection of New York State newspapersavailable online. Try using full names encased in quotation marks, followed perhaps by a town or year, for best results. I usually setit to "search all of the words". It's a slightly quirkysite but often quite helpful. Let me know if you have trouble usingthe site and I would be happy to do a brief search for you.

Have you been able to find anycensus information on Barney and family? You can find the individualsin his household from the 1855 census on our database, but you won'tsee the original page image. You can try familysearch.org (you mayhave to make a free account) for census and other family information, which could be very helpful in tracing Barney et al. For reference,Barney and wife Martha are in the 1855 census with sons James,Alfred, and Mary, an adopted daughter. I don't see George, butperhaps he was living elsewhere as an apprentice, or was married.Since I haven't had much luck finding that schedule onfamilysearch.org yet, I'll include a transcript of the 1855 here:
Ihope that comes through ok. Other than names, ages, and nativity, ofnote is that the column for "owner of land" is notpopulated, so I am guessing he may have rented a very modest (ormaybe even shack-like) home. Not included in the above transcript isthe value of his home, which was $25. The Putnams also do not appearon the 1852 or 1858 maps of Livingston County, which names onlylandowners and dwelling occupants, I believe. I did check for some oftheir neighbors' names to help locate the approximate area they mayhave lived and found those other names just north of Tuscarora in theTown of Mt. Morris. Tuscarora is in the south-east part of thetownship. Here are those maps for reference and interest:

1858:https://www.loc.gov/item/2013593226/

The columns for "nativity"in the 1855 census, if correct, may give you an idea of where tosearch next for Barney's parents. Another option would be to see ifyou can find a death certificate for Barney (it may be held at thetown or city where he died). It might list his birthplace and/orparents' names. Obituaries could help, too, though sometimes theydon't furnish as much info as we'd like.

I also found the 1860 censusrecord for the family on familysearch.org, and they were living inMichigan by that time. That schedule should pop up easily onfamilysearch.org.

I checked our other resources inthis office that are not yet indexed online and one other thingpopped up: "Barm Putnam" [sic] appears on an 1837 petitionof Mt. Morris citizens against slavery; there is no more informationavailable on him specifically, but knowing this was a cause of his isquite interesting, I think.

It looks like he was in Mt.Morris from at least the 1830s until somewhere in the late 1850s.Unfortunately this is a difficult time period to research as there isnot a lot of documentation, but I hope the few items I mention abovegive you some information and tips. I would be happy to assist youmore if I can! Please keep me in the loop if you have more questions.

Bestwishes,
