Death
Sam J. Furr, Jr., age 93, of Olney, Texas, died Sunday, September 7, 2008, at his farm in Young County. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008, in the chapel of Lunn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Holloway, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Graham, Texas, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home. Sam was born June 21, 1915 in Young County, Texas to the late Samuel Jones Furr, Sr. and Margaret Zola (Weilenman) Furr. He and Margaret J. Newton were married on February 10, 1936, in Fort Worth, Texas. She preceded him in death on February 11, 1989. Sam was a graduate of the University of Texas. He was a partner of Baker-Furr Land Company in Ft. Worth until returning to Olney in 1946. Sam was a native of Young County, a very active and life long democrat. He was a Democratic Justice of the Peace of Young County for 37 years. He also served as municipal judge during part of his term as J.P. He was the Olney Chamber of Commerce Manager in the 1950’s when the City was partially destroyed by a tornado. During the rebuilding, he organized the construction of the Tom Griffin Park. Sam served as District Governor of District 2E and was a member of the Lions Club for 66 years. He was in the farming and ranching business for over 60 years. Other businesses he had been involved with were real estate development, insurance, and credit bureau. Sam was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Olney. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with friends and family in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Sam is survived by two daughters, Margaret Darden and husband Lynn of Dallas, Texas and Playa del Carmen, Mexico and Betty Richie and husband Boyd of Graham, Texas; five grandchildren, Kim Darden of Dallas, Texas, Vickie Langner and husband Fred of Wichita Falls, Texas, Sally Hudspeth and husband Brent of Dallas, Texas, Chris Richie and wife Julie of Dallas, Texas and Tracy Bowles and husband Andy of Wichita Falls, Texas; and special friend, Gib Wright and wife Joanne of Olney, Texas. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Fred Langner, Brent Hudspeth, Chris Richie, Andy Bowles, Gib Wright and Bob Elliott. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday evening September 9, 2008 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lunn Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Texas Democratic Party, 505 W. 12th Street, Austin, Texas 78701 or to a charity of one’s choice.Endnotes
