Adam Lawson FURR
(9 Apr 1825 - 23 Aug 1905)
He came to Pope City, Arkansas, in 1860 from Stanly County, North Carolina, and homesteaded three miles southeast of Dover on the present Morgan Road. The wagon train consisted of 16 wagons. They were on the road for one month and crossed the Mississippi River the day Lincoln was elected. He was a fine blacksmith and built the first blacksmith shop in Pope City. He raised corn, wheat, cotton, oats and a large family and two orphaned grandsons, Will and Frank Safley, sons of Whit Safley and Patsy Furr Safley. During the Civil War, Adam Furr was the Captain of Company F, 15th Regiment, Arkansas Militia.
The following was written for an article in the Pope County Historial Journal several years ago by Capt. Adam's youngest daughter, Fronia McCracken:
"Adam Furr was a Captain in the militia during the Civil War and trained his men on the site of McFadden Cemetery near Dover. He and his family came to Arkansas on a wagon train in 1860. It was three months journey that found them camped on the bank of the Mississippi River the day they heard Abraham Lincoln had been elected the 16th President of the United States. Captain Furr was a fine Blacksmith. He owned the first blacksmith shop in Pope County. He also built a grist mill on the Piney Branch, which runs through his farm. He raised corn, wheat, cotton, oats and a large orchard besides a large family, which included two orphaned grandsons, Will and Frank SAFLEY, sons of his daughter, Patsy."
