Death

Vann Matthews Garner of Charlotte, NC died peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born January 22, 1945, Vann was the son of the late Harry C. Garner and Helen Starnes Garner. Vann was preceded in death by his daughter, Vanessa Garner and two brothers, Robert Garner and Fred Garner. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Debby Crump Garner, his children Bonnie Garner Rataj(Junior Rataj), Angie Garner Keys(Curt Keys), Matt Garner(Teresa Garner), and Christopher Garner(Ashley Garner). Daly Furr. Vann is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Amber Medeiros(Paul Medeiros), Nikki Rataj, Christy Pierce(Nate Pierce), Emily Garner, Christian Garner, Elizabeth Garner, Tyler Garner, Ethan Garner and Kayleigh Furr. 6 great grandchildren; Lisa Rataj, Alexandra Rataj, Dominic Medeiros, Nevin Pierce, Aidea Pierce and Aidan Pierce. Vann was a long-time professional paper hanger and owned his own business, Vann M. Garner Paperhanging. He was a member of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America(PDCA), and the National Guild of Professional Paperhangers. While living in Lake Wylie, Vann was an active member of Lake Wylie Christian Assembly. Upon moving back to Charlotte, Vann became a member of Statesville Road Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 5th at 1:00 PM in the Paul Helton Chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Dr., Charlotte. Family will be receiving guests Monday between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vann's memory may be sent to the American Diabetes Association , 1300 Baxter St., Suite 150, Charlotte, NC 28204.
