Death
James Madison "Mack" Hartis 97 of Bennettsville passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at McLeod Hospice of Florence. Mack was born in Matthews, NC on June 8, 1928, to Jesse Eugene and Ethel Viola Furr Hartis. He graduated June 4, 1945, from Matthews High School being the last graduating class of the 11th grade. Upon graduating, he attended Carolina College in Charlotte majoring in accounting. He also worked for Southern Bell for 4 years before being drafted in 1950. Mack served in the Air Force as a Budget and Accounting Auditor at March Field in Riverside, California. He served 4 years and made Staff Sergeant in 32 months. Upon moving to Bennettsville in the late 1960's, Mack worked for Oak River Mills for 19 years as an accountant. He then worked for his son at Edwards Refrigeration (Eri) in Bennettsville until January of 2025. Mack was a faithful member of First Methodist Church of Bennettsville where he taught Sunday School for many years and served in the Adult Choir for 8 years. Mack was a member of the Kiwanis Club from 1971 until 1974, and served as secretary, Vice President, and President during his membership. Mack married the love of his life in 1971, Anna Margaret Sanders Edwards. They were married 44 years before Anna Margaret passed away in 2015. Preceding him in death, his parents and wife mentioned above, and a daughter, Mary Dorothy Hartis, a grandson, Thomas Madison Edwards, a brother, Raiford Hartis, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth H. Lemond, and Lamelle H. Hagerty. Survivors include his son, Vance M. Edwards (Lynda), daughter, Amy E. Thomas (Phil), grandchildren, Trey Edwards (Sarah), Jake Thomas (Stephanie), and Maggie T. Blackmon (Ryan), great grandchildren, J.D. Thomas, Lincoln Thomas, Savannah Edwards, Lucas Blackmon, and Madelyn Blackmon, two brothers, Jerry Hartis (Dot), Henry Hartis (Vivian), and a sister Theresa Ozment (Jay), and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Burroughs Funeral Home, followed by burial in McCall Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., just prior to the service. Memorials may be made to First Methodist Church, P.O. 456, Bennettsville, SC 29512 or to the charity of one's choice. The family sincerely thanks all the nurses, techs, and staff of McLeod Hospice House for their love, support, and care shown to Mack and the family.
