Death

Annie Marjorie Furr West passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024 in Pensacola, Florida at the age of 93, after a long struggle with dementia. Marjorie was born on April 2, 1931 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Dewey O'Neal Furr, Sr. and Lula Morrow Furr. She attended school in Shreveport and was a graduate of Byrd High School. She then attended Judson College in Alabama, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1951. While in graduate school at LSU, she met James Dickey West, Sr., and the two were married in 1952. Marjorie moved to Mobile, Alabama at the age of 21 and spent her entire adult life there. In her earlier years she often worked as a model for various clothing stores, including a number of appearances on the local weekday television show, "Women's World." She was an accomplished seamstress who produced many beautiful formal dresses for winter formals, debutante balls, and Mardi Gras parties. In her middle years, she spent Sunday afternoons working as a "boutique lady" in the Mobile Stein Mart store, and never failed to bring freshly baked cookies for her coworkers to enjoy. As an affable and energetic person, Marjorie made many friends over the course of her lifetime. She was a wonderful mother who was very involved in all her children's activities as they were growing up. She adored all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attended many soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, and swimming events. Family was always the most important part of her life. Beyond family, Marjorie's next greatest passion was tennis. She began playing in the 1960's, and only stopped playing late in life due to health reasons. She was the captain of multiple tennis teams over many years, participating in tournaments in Mobile as well as surrounding states. Much of her tennis was enjoyed at the Country Club of Mobile, where she was a member for over 60 years. She was a fan of all sports and particularly enjoyed watching basketball, ice skating, and football, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide. Marjorie was preceded in death by her brother, Dewey O'Neal Furr, Jr. in 1985. She is survived by five children, Leigh West Sellers (Michael) of Mobile; James Dickey West, Jr. (Ann) of Magnolia Springs, AL; Joseph Robert West of Mobile; Morrow West Bullington of Daphne, AL; and William Daniel West of Mobile, as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A lifelong cat lover, she also leaves behind two feline friends. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at the Radney chapel at 11:00 AM. A graveside service and interment will occur at Forest Park East Cemetery in Shreveport, Louisiana on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Shriners Children's.
