Dan James Lawson, 94, formerly of Charlotte, N.C. died on Saturday March 10, 2007 in Wilmington NC.Mr. Lawson was born July 25, 1912 in Birmingham, Alabama the youngest and last surviving of four sons born to the late Ida Murphy Lawson and William Lawson. He received his early education in the Birmingham, Alabama school system and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during this period. Mr. Lawson attended Auburn University on a football scholarship and graduated with honors in 1935. Upon graduation he began his career as a mechanical engineer with Southern Bell Telephone Company. Mr. Lawson married Rosemary Chambless of Montgomery, Alabama on February 19, 1938. His career with Southern Bell continued until his retirement as division engineer in Charlotte, NC in July 1977, interrupted for five years when he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army in April 1941. During his military career in 1942 Mr. Lawson graduated from Harvard University in Electronic and Radar Communications School. He served as a communications officer in several signal sections while stateside before his overseas service in Caserta, Italy as a signal officer in 1944-1945. He left active military duty in 1946 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rosemary Chambless Lawson; son, Dan James Lawson Jr. and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Parker Lawson, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter, Jeaneen Lawson Furr and son-in-law, Daniel Furr, of Wilmington NC; grandchildren, Scott Furr, Andrew Furr, Russell Furr, Daneen Furr, Chris Lawson and Mary Lawson Carlton. He was preceded in death by grandson Alex Lawson. Mr. Lawson is also survived by great grandchildren,Savannah Furr, Drew Furr, Landen Furr, Jack Furr, Madeline Furr, Jacob Lawson and Wyatt Carlton. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 11:30 AM at Covenant Church, 210 Station Road, Wilmington, NC with Pastor Jim Davis officiating. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the service at 2344 Scotts Hill Loop Road, Wilmington, NC. Dan Lawson, a man of integrity with a unique appreciation for detail and the energy to persevere while maintaining an eye for what was practical.
