Death

SALISBURY - Charlyse Culp Waddell , age 87, of 1400 East Colonial Drive, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009. Mrs. Waddell was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Danville, Va. She was the eldest daughter of Helen Furr Culp and Charles Gray Culp of Salisbury. She was a graduate of Old Farm Life High School in China Grove and developed a great love for reading, which later led her into work with the Salisbury Public Library and its Bookmobile program. In recognition of this and many other works of public service, Mrs. Waddell was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Salisbury Lions Club. An accomplished artist specializing in oil painting, Mrs. Waddell began studying art as a young child under the direction of Mrs. Cal Hammer. She was well known for her works depicting birds and outdoor landscapes, along with a talent for replicating several renowned pieces by Vincent Van Gogh and several copies of the Angelus, originally created by Jean-Francois Millet During World War II, Mrs. Waddell supported her husband and our country as he served in the US Army Air Corps. A proud breast cancer survivor, Mrs. Waddell was a former Trust Officer at Security Bank and Trust and later Sun Trust Bank. She was also a proud wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Waddell was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Mr. Lewis E. Waddell, Sr., who passed away last Aug.; a brother, James Edward (Jimmy) Culp; and a sister, Lou Ellen Culp. Mrs. Waddell is survived by her son, Lewis E. Waddell, Jr. of Conover; her grandson, Michael Waddell and wife, Heidi of Cincinnati, Ohio; her great-grandchildren, Andrew Ketchum Waddell and Caroline Elizabeth Waddell of Cincinnati, Ohio; and her sister, Lanie (Sue) Cox of Salisbury; along with several nieces and nephews. Affectionately known as "Dell" to many friends and relatives, Mrs. Waddell is also survived by a special cousin, Mrs. Louise Waddell, who visited with her on a daily basis. Service and Burial: A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29 in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Salisbury, with the Rev. Steve Haines and the Rev. Martha Ballard officiating. A private committal service will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens in China Grove. Visitation: The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Memorials: Memorials may be made to the Rowan Public Library Foundation at 704-216-4039 or the Nazareth Children's Home. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Andrina Bolick for her special attention and friendship towards Mrs. Waddell over the years. The Waddell family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover.
