Death
Marvin Coolidge Walker, 87, of Blowing Rock, and formerly of Statesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at his home with his children, after a short illness. He was born on March 8, 1921, in Wilkes County, and was the son of the late Harvey Andrew Walker and Lottie Mae Privette Walker. Mr. Walker was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army with the 36th Coast Artillery Battalion, where he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. He retired from J.C. Steele and Sons of Statesville and attended Mt. Pisgah Church. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Walker, Tracey Walker and Dempsey Walker. Survivors include his former wife, Elizabeth Haire Walker; two sons, Matson Walker (Pam) of Statesville and Murray Walker (Brenda) of Stony Point; four daughters, Marsha Furr (Mike) of Concord, Melinda Thurlow (Linwood), Melba Goodin (Jimmy), and Mindy Campbell, all of Statesville; a brother, the Rev. Coy Walker (Cleda) of Taylorsville; three sisters, Margie Hollar (Joe) of North Wilkesboro, Mary Patterson of Statesville and Ruth Mullis (Charles) of Hamptonville; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with neighbor and friend, Thelma White; and beloved dog, Bubba. Our daddy and our brother loved his family and his country. There was always a special place in his heart for the elderly and less fortunate. He took great pride in feeding, caring for, and making them feel loved. He never met a stranger, welcoming everyone he met into his home. Special thanks go to Gordon Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County associates Latisha, Barbara and Dr. Moffit for your unwavering love and care of our dad and brother during his illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, with his brother, the Rev. Coy Walker, and the Rev. Tom Corbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Nicholson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of his son, Matson Walker, 122 Pecan Lane, Statesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gordon Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
