Death

KANNAPOLIS - Joyce Ann Godfrey Sterling, 60, of 2202 Charles Town Court, died at her home on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, following a period of declining health. The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis, with the Rev. Tom Cabaniss officiating. Interment will be at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Whitley's Funeral Home. The headquarters will be at the home of her mother, Thelma Godfrey, 200 Bishop Lane, Apt. 102, Concord. Ms. Sterling was born Nov. 27, 1947, in Cabarrus County, to the late William R. and Thelma Furr Godfrey of Concord. Joyce was a lifelong area resident. She graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1966 and the Kannapolis Business Academy in 1968. She was a former C.N.A. and had done private duty nursing. She was a member of the Future Nurses of America and First Baptist Church of Kannapolis. She loved to paint and was an avid elephant collector. She is survived by fiance, Jerry Bommelje of the home; daughter, Joy Michelle Privett Vansoest of Concord; mother, Thelma Furr Godfrey of Concord; sister, Kathy Hearne of Kannapolis; nephew, Jason Hilburn of Kannapolis; special cousin, Linda Bishop of Winter Park, Fla.; best friend, Clara Beaver of Salisbury; and numerous other cousins.
