Death
KANNAPOLIS - Thelma Furr Godfrey, 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Kathy Hearne, in Kannapolis, after a period of declining health. She was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Cabarrus County, the daughter of the late Eli A. Furr and Mary Davis Furr. In her earlier years she worked at the former Cannon Mills Company office. Later, she worked 25 years with Cabarrus Bank & Trust Company. After retirement Mrs. Godfrey was soloist in the Senior Entertainers Band, entertaining in churches, nursing homes, senior centers, and meetings all over North Carolina. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Kannapolis, where she was involved in Sunday School, senior adult choir, adult choir, and Keenagers Senior Citizens group, and the Watchman Prayer ministry. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, William Roy Godfrey and her daughter, Joyce Sterling. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, officiated by Dr. Thomas E. Cabaniss. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include her other daughter, Kathy Hearne of Kannapolis; her grandson, Jason Hilburn of Kannapolis; and a niece, Joy Vansoest of Concord.
