Death

Grace Carmichael Watson, 93, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Anne Marie Futrell, in Angier. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Rowland United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Lee Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Rowland Cemetery. Born April 12, 1916, in Rowland, NC, to the late Dr. Thaddeus Wirt and Madge Fort Carmichael, she was a graduate of Rowland High School and Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro). She married L.J. Watson, Jr. (Jack) on August 2, 1941. During their sixty-five years of marriage, they were avid travelers and patrons of the arts. Mrs. Watson enjoyed sharing her varied interests by presenting programs on topics such as her beloved Dickens Village collection. During her career as a music educator, she taught both public school music and individual piano lessons. She was a charter member of the North Carolina Music Teachers’ Association and was actively involved in this organization for forty-six years. She was very active in her church and for many years was choir director of Rowland United Methodist Church and also Rowland Baptist Church. Mrs. Watson is survived by her daughters, Barbara W. Furr (husband, Jim) of Wilmington, and Anne Marie Futrell of Angier; two grandsons, Michael S. Steele (wife, Claudette) and Christopher R. Steele; and one great-grandson, Wesley Jackson Steele. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her brother, Thad. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rowland United Methodist Church, P.O.
