Death

Shirley J. Cockman, 75 of Carthage passed away on May 10, 2013 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Born on October 12, 1937 in Moore Co., North Carolina to the late Archie and Irene Furr. Shirley enjoyed beach trips with her family and gardening. One of her favorite past times was watching her hummingbirds feed in the mornings. Her most joyous moment was the birth of her grandkids, Brianna and Seth, which she loved unconditionally. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, John E. Cummings; son, John Lee Cummings; two brothers, John Furr, Sr. and Archie Furr, Jr. (Bud); and one sister, Francis Williams. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard J. Cockman; daughter, Jeannie Horney and her husband Mark; three sisters, Linda Chavis, Judith Hatcher, and Kathy Mehta; two sister-in-laws, Laverne Cockman and Helen Edwards; two grandchildren, Brianna and Seth Horney; also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines on Monday 7:00-9:00PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00PM at Emmanuel Baptist Church with visitation prior at the church from 1:00-1:45PM. Interment to follow at Bethesda Cemetery.
