Death

A graveside service for Elva Angeline Daniel Estes, 89, of Chico, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Chico Cemetery. She died on Monday, March 18, 2002, in Chico. She was born on March 27, 1912, in Durham, N.C., to Eugene Carneige Daniel and Iola Graham Ross. Her family was well known for its furniture business in Winston Salem, N.C. She moved from North Carolina to Chico in the late 1940s with her husband, Ralph M. Furr, and their children. She worked at the Hotel Oaks on Second and Salem Street, the Park Hotel on Fourth and Main Street, Burtons, the Two-One-Two and Chico-Chico Club. In 1950, she married LeRoy Estes of Durham. She, her husband and Woody Estes were owners and operators of the Vecino Theater for many years. Survivors include four sons, Ralph M. Furr, Eugene R. Furr, Anthony I. Furr and William F. Furr; four daughters, Anita I. Casto, Iona L. McCain, Shamra Braswell and Caron V. Burmeister; a brother, Winfred Daniel; two sisters, Lois Horton and Verna Daniel of North Carolina; and 23 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Estes. Arrangements are under the direction of Bidwell Chapel.
