Death

Mr. Z. R. Benfield, 73, of Charlotte, NC died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at his home. Mr. Benfield was born December 16, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, NC, a son of the late Arthur Junior and Etta Leola Gladden Benfield. He served in The United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was a hardworking man with strong work ethics and owned Benfield Tree Service for thirty-five years which his son, Gary still operates the family business. A service to celebrate the life of Z.R. Benfield will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 12, 2003 from the sanctuary of Wilson Grove Baptist Church with The Reverend Charles Sabage and The Reverend Michael Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will greet friends 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel. Mr. Benfield is survived by his wife of 34 years, Libby Furr Benfield; four children, Gary Rotan Benfield of Monroe, Denise Rhodes and husband, Jerry of Concord; Cathy Van Dyke and husband Rob of Belmont and Sharon Young and husband, Calvin of Charlotte; six grandchildren, William Paul Curley, Jay Chastain, David Van Dyke, Priscilla McDaniel and husband Michael, Shannon Young and Shelly Rhodes; one great-grandson, Stephen Curley; one sister, Mrs. Ovella Cochrane and husband, J.C. of Mint Hill. Memorials may be made in remembrance of Z.R. Benfield to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Mint Hill Chapel.
