Paul Fredrich Mack FURR

(5 Aug 1850 - 6 Mar 1935)

The Banks Observer, May 30, 1888
Mr. P. F. M. Furr is now running his reaper in full blast, and is one of our best farmers. Wonder why he can't---Well, he is not by himself, if we know ourself.

The first bank to incorporate in Maysville was the Maysville Bank, located on the Banks County side of Maysville, in 1890. This bank, in all probability, was the predecessor of the Atkins National Bank, which still stands at 4 Homer Street. This building has served as Maysville's City Hall since 19xx. Those involved in the corporation included Hugh Atkins (Civil War veteran and son of Maysville pioneer merchant Abe Atkins), Thomas E. Atkins (son of Hugh), M. M. Sanders (brother-in-law of Hugh), I. A. Madden, J. R. Carr, C. T. Bacon, J. M. Eberhart, I. D. Baugh, C. C. Sanders (brother-in-law of Hugh), W. S. Williams and A. D. Candler (later became Governor of Georgia from 1898-1902). The Georgia General Assembly set the initial capital stock issue at $25,000.00 with shares to be issued at $100.00 each. Once $10,000 of its stock had been sold, the bank could begin operating. The bank later became a national bank and a member of the Federal Reserve System. It advertised in The Maysville Enterprise and listed officers as P. F. M. Furr, president; M. P. Deadwyler, vice president; and William Miller, cashier. The bank closed during the Great Depression. The upstairs portion was used as the Maysville telephone exchange. The bank building was sold to the Town of Maysville in 19xx and has remained as our city hall since. The original bank teller windows, rails and marble counters remain today as well as the bank vault.
