Hanß Adam RÖDER
(2 Feb 1647 - 1723)
Last name also shown as Roder and Roeder.
It is speculated that the Roder's came from Switzerland just prior to 1703 since no records are found in the Mutterstadt Reformed Church until the baptism of Anna Maria Margareth in 1703. Hans Adam Roder was baptisted June 2, 1706 at the Mutterstadt Church. Present were his parents Hans Adam and Katharina Roder, and his grandparents Adam and Anna Maria Roder. No land deeds were recorded prior to 1703 in Mutterstadt Germany.
Anna Maria Roder, widow of Hans Adam lived with her daughter in law Katharina Roder until her death, recorded at Mutterstadt Reformed Church - July 18, 1723. Katharina, widow of Adam Roder wnt to Pennsylvania about two years after Anna Maria's death.
There are only two known children of Adam and Anna Maria Roder: They are Adam and Rosia Barbara.
The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 now allowed Reformed Protestants (Calvinists) and all Christians to worship freely and to practice their faith in public and in private at their will. This treaty ended the 30 Years religious wars, which had devastated and depopulated the area. People now felt free to migrate to Germany from Switzerland and other areas of Germany, as well as countries to the east. Some towns even encouraged migration by granting land to those who were willing to settle, thereby making their towns more stable and safe.
While many Swiss did migrate into the Pfalz/Palatinate region during this period, so did Germans from other areas. We do not yet know whether our Roeder family came from Switzerland or from Germany. There were German Roeders just to the east of this area who did end up in Maudach and who may very well be related. More research is needed!
“Roeder” most likely comes from the Old Middle German word "roden," which meant to make arable or to till the land. With the Umlaut and the "-er" ending, it meant a "person who farmed (and probably owned) a small plot of land."
