Had an adopted son. He operated the A. J. Furr Lumber Company of Locust in Stanly County. He was active in the Baptist Church. His wife was a Methodist.
Leon Huneycutt’s father, Roy, began Locust Lumber in 1952, but the family’s ties to the company go back even further. Leon’s great-uncle, A.J. Furr, owned the former A.J. Furr Lumber Company, Leon said. Roy served in World War II, and when he came home from the Philippines, he worked for Furr. The uncle’s health was in poor shape, so Roy purchased part of the company from him in 1949 and the rest in 1952. At that point, Roy started Locust Lumber. He passed the company on to his sons, Leon and Joel.

Death
LOCUST —A J Furr, 82, of Locust, died Monday in Stanly County Hospital. He was born Dec 5, 1890 in Stanly County to the late James A. and Belinda Teeter Furr. Survivors include the wife, Cossette Simpson Furr, one son, Harold G. Furr of Locust, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of World War I, a retired merchant, lumberman and contractor. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4 pm at First Baptist Church here by the Rev J. D. Griffin. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body was to be taken to the residence this morning where it will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to final rites.The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte, North Carolina, December 19, 1972
