Death
Funeral services for Oliver Bowman Furr, Jr., 26, of 623 Bradford drive, Thomasboro, who died Wednesday night in a local hospital of burns received that afternoon when a can of gasoline exploded, will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at Tabernacle A.R.P. church. Dr. Ernest Neal Orr, pastor of the church, will officiate, and interment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Marion C. Davis, R. L. Boyd, Herman Rape, Raymond L. Mabry, John E. Gillis, and L. V. Towe. Mr. Furr was born March 9, 1923, in Mecklenburg county and was manager of the American News company at 408 West Palmer street. At the time of the fatal accident, he was on vacation and was preparing to burn a pile of scrap lumber in the back yard of his home. His wife was in another part of the yard and upon seeing the flames attempted to put the fire out with a garden hose. Mr. Furr is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jewell Payne Furr; two sisters, Mrs. Athenae Helms of Charlotte and Mrs. W. L. Campbell of Laurel, Md., and a brother, Earl Furr of Charlotte.The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte, North Carolina, July 29, 1949
