Death

Mr. William Mathias Furr, familiarly known throughout this county as “Tyse” Furr, died at his home in East Albemarle at about 3:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Furr had been ill for some time, suffering with something like sciatica, but was thought to have been improving. About 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon he was taken suddenly worse, and died within a half hour. The funeral service was held at the home Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, and the body was buried at Fairview Cemetery. A large crowd attended the funeral, as the deceased was known far and wide throughout this county. Mr. Furr was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Furr, of Western Stanly. He was a brother of Mr. R. N. Furr, chairman of the board of county commissioners, of this county, and father of Mr. Lonnie Furr, who is the News-Herald leading linotype operator and mechanic. He was nearing his 64th birthday anniversary, having been born on March 16th, 1860. He was a member of Central Methodist Church of this city, having moved his membership from Love’s Chapel, in Western Stanly, upon taking up his residence in this place. He was one of the county’s best citizens, having come of a family of substantial qualities. Mr. Furr leaves surviving a widow, who, before her marriage, was Miss Margaret Green, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Green, of this county, and a sister of ex-Sheriff S. R. Green, of this place. The following children also survive: Mrs. D. M. Coley, of Georgeville; Miss May Elizabeth Furr, of this place; Mesrs. Robert L., James H., Lennie M. and A. B. Furr, all of this place. Several brothers also survive, these being Mr. R. N. Furr, of this place; John A. Furr, Kirkland, Texas; Geo. F. and J. Hampton Furr, of Stanfield, this county, also C. C. Furr, of Oakboro.
