John Adam Ellis FURR

Padgett [Texas} is located about nine and one-half miles southwest of Olney on State Highway 79 (the old Olney-Throckmorton Hwy). It was named for I. B. Padgett who came to the area in 1875. He planted the first wheat in the area, had the first threshing machine and built the first cotton gin. At its peak Padgett had a gin, several churches, a two teacher community school, post office, general store and several businesses. In 1944 the Padgett School #28 was consolidated into the Olney Schools. All that remains of this town today is the cemetery. Among other pioneers of Padgett were the Bob and Adam Furr families, A. M. Eddleman, Durham family, Vardy family and F. A. Tandy.

Death

THROCKMORTON, Texas (Special) — Adam Furr, 68, Young County resident more than 50 years, died at his home in the Padgitt community between Throckmorton and Olney Thursday. Furr suffered a heart attack and died before he could be moved to a hospital. Funeral services for Furr will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. from the First Methodist Church in Olney. Burial will be in Olney Cemetery under direction of Merriman Funeral Home of Throckmorton. The farmer, rancher and extensive land owner is survived by his widow; two sons, Ellis Furr of Olney and Grover Furr of Megargel; one daughter, Adele Furr of Olney; one sister, Mrs. J. B. Hendricks of Knox City; one brother, S. J. Furr of Newcastle, and five grandchildren.
