Notes
Death
Mrs. Adeline Burris died Saturday night, June 21, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Margaret Moore. She was buried Sunday, the funeral being conducted by Rev. Jobe in her home church at St. Joe, in the presence of many sorrowing friends. Mrs. Burris was 96 years, 4 months and 21 days old at the time of her death, having been born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, Jan. 30, 1823. She came with her father, Sawyer Ashmore, to Arkansas at the age of 16. Quite a colony came long with them, the trip being made in ox wagons and Adeline being one of the party who walked most of the time and helped drive the cattle. It was on this trip that she and JL Burris (James Littleton Burris) became lovers. They were married in 1840 and located in Gumlog near the Old Baptist Graveyard in which they buried their first child, it being the first person buried there. Mr. and Mrs. Burris then moved to Isabelle Creek and entered 240 acres (320 acres) of land, where they lived until JL Burris died August 29, 1895. Since that time, Aunt Adeline has lived most of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Moore.Arkansas Courier-Democrat, Russellville, Arkansas, June 1919:
It was during the journey from Lawrence County, Tennessee that James and Elizabeth Adeline Ashmore fell in love, and they were married on November 12, 1840 in Pope County. Their first child, stillborn, is buried at the Old Baptist Cemetery in Center Valley (Pope County) Arkansas. Other children (and grandchildren) are buried in other Pope County cemeteries, such as James Franklin Burris and his wife, Malinda J (Moore) Burris, who was born in 1854.
