Notes
Death
James Littleton Burris came to Arkansas by covered wagon in 1838 along with his brothers, John and Richard C, and some of the Ashmore family. The three brothers are listed in the 1840 census of Pope County, Arkansas. It was during the journey from Lawrence County, Tennessee that James and Elizabeth Adeline Ashmore fell in love, and they were married on November 12, 1840 in Pope County. Their first child, stillborn, is buried at the Old Baptist Cemetery in Center Valley (Pope County) Arkansas. Other children (and grandchildren) are buried in other Pope County cemeteries, such as James Franklin Burris and his wife, Melinda J (Moore) Burris, who was born in 1854. Although he was not the oldest brother, it was to James Littleton that the rest of the family turned in times of need. He raised three children of his brother William Carroll, and helped with the grandchildren of his brother John. In some ways, he was the patriarch of the Burris family in Pope County.Endnotes
