Death
The world got a little quieter, and Heaven got a lot more entertaining on March 4, 2025 when Richard L. Delaney decided it was time to clock out for good. Born in Minnesota but a proud, adopted Texan, Richard spent his adult life in Dallas and Houston, making friends, sharing stories, and savoring good scotch (because life is too short for the cheap stuff). Richard was a devoted partner to Sue G. Brooks, who took him on more adventures than he probably signed up for, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way. Together, they traveled, laughed, and made enough memories to last several lifetimes. He was a loving father to Jill Delaney Furr (and husband Mike), grandchildren Kyle Furr and Paige Furr McKenzie (and husband Marcus) and John Delaney (and wife, Tricia), who no doubt inherited his sharp wit, great laugh, and stubborn streak. He also embraced his extended family, Chris Brooks (and wife Karen); Beverly Brooks Thompson (and husband Corky) and children Brennan, Dalton, and William; and Josh Penrod (and wife Delia), and children Merredith (and husband Jared and son Waylon), Katherine, Jenna and Stephanie (and husband Bobby and their children Lily, Liam, Emmarie) - each of whom now carries a piece of his humor, wisdom, and possibly his love for a strong debate and a spontaneous road trip. They each have fond memories of Paw Paw at little league, softball and soccer games, swim meets, dance recitals, giving bike riding lessons, and never missing a graduation. He also took great joy in his rescue dogs Lucky, Scratch, Samson, and Marley. Sue’s cats, not so much. Richard was the oldest child of John and Joan Delaney (both deceased) and the much-loved brother of Donna Logan (deceased), Linda Long, Donald Delaney (deceased), Mary Jo Broz (and husband Lawrence), Michael Delaney (deceased) and wife Kathleen, and Robert Delaney (deceased). He was a very proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, proving that once a Marine, always a Marine—especially when it came to telling legendary stories about his service. He was particularly proud of his quick maneuvering and major sacrifice to spend multiple tours as a clerk typist in Honolulu! After attending East Texas State University, he spent his career in Industrial Safety Sales before making a post-career pivot as a Hot Shot driver —because retirement sounded far too boring. Richard’s passions were simple, yet refined: football, fantasy football, scotch, a great steak, and the wild world of day trading penny stocks. Some men chase dreams—Richard chased volatile, high-risk investments with the optimism of a Vegas high-roller and the deep belief that this one was finally going to be “the big one.” His dedication to tracking the stock market with the same intensity as his fantasy football team meant that at any given time, he was either celebrating a “win” or explaining why the latest dip was “all part of the strategy.” To say Richard will be missed is an understatement. The world has lost a one-of-a-kind man, but if we know him, he’s probably somewhere with a glass in hand, arguing over a bad play call, checking the pre-market numbers, and explaining why this was finally the year his fantasy team was going all the way. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025 with a private service for family. All friends are welcome to attend the 3:30 PM Graveside Service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery where we will honor him the way he would have wanted—with laughter, great stories, and maybe a toast in his name. In lieu of flowers, set your fantasy lineup, buy a risky stock, play a strong hand of blackjack, yell at the refs, or raise a glass of good scotch in his honor. Cheers, Richard. It’s five o’clock somewhere— we will miss you every hour in between.Endnotes
