Death

Velma M. Furr (88) formerly of Matthews, NC passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in Blythewood, SC. Born on January 27, 1935, Velma was the sixth of seven children born to Walter and Dollie Phillips Miller. She grew up on her family farm in Union Township in Wilkes County where her job was to lead the cows down the family owned side of Miller’s Mountain. Velma graduated from high school in 1953. Jimmie Roger Furr entered Velma’s life and made quite the impression. Unbeknownst to their families, Velma and Roger ran off and eloped on September 28, 1959. This solid romantic relationship lasted 34 years until Roger passed away in 1993 at the young age of 57. Velma was employed as a switchboard operator for over twenty years with JP Stevens and then with AAA until retirement. Velma loved her church family at First Baptist Church of Columbia along with gardening, coin collecting, canning and reading her beloved Bible. Left to mourn her loss are her devoted children Mike (Sharon) Furr of Columbia, SC and Kim (Mike) Hughes of Blythewood, SC; cherished grandchildren Jackie Hughes and Heather (Toby) Kemp of Columbia along with loving sisters Boyd Lisk of Charlotte, NC and Linda (Ed) Sinclair of Anderson, SC. Velma is preceded in death by her parents, husband Roger Furr, sisters Pauline Taylor and Loretta Miller and brothers Ralph and Robert Miller. The family will welcome friends on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 1pm at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. Funeral service is scheduled for 2pm with burial immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
