Notes
Death
Thursday, January 22, 1931, that staunch Confederate Veteran, H. H. Furr, lay down in that dreamless sleep which awakens to the reveille of eternal life. The care of a watchful grandson brought the best medical aid and nursing to prolong life and ease suffering but all was done in vain. Age and its complications had ravaged the rugged body and death came as its release from pain. H. H. Furr was a Mississippian by birth, a mechanic by trade, a brave soldier during four years of Civil conflict, a patient, industrious toiler, a faithful husband, a good and kind hearted friend. His was a life of activity and he merited the long years promised to them who honor father and mother. He knew no evil, spoke no evil of anyone. Through affliction he lost most of the senses of hearing and of sight, but he did not complain. His was an exemplary life for them so afflicted. He held membership in Camp 1488, United Confederate Veterans. It is a far cry to December 15 1838. What progress has man wrought in agriculture, in inventions in transportation, in science since then! The days of drudgery have passed but Mr. Furr saw many of them. The Mexican war, the Civil war, the Spanish-American war, the World war came and passed in his life time. Nor from a distance but as a part he viewed many sanguinary; battles of the Civil war. Vicksburg Franklin, Chickamauga found him fighting for the stars and bars, to lose but to accept the loss and come penniless to a penniless home. He marries and with a good wife (nee Lucy Ann Hamm) came to Louisiana to wring a living from its prairies. He came with his wife to New Iberia to enjoy the comforts of a modern home provided by his son-in- law, Dr. I. T. Rand. Son-in-law, wife and daughter preceded him in death. He is survived by three grandchildren, Byron Rand of Macomb Mississippi, Scranton Rand of New Iberia, and Mrs. Ruth Simon of Crowley, also one great grandchild. Funeral services were held from the Rand home, last Saturday afternoon. Rev. A. M. Serex, assisted by Rev. J. H. Strother, conducted the services, a large assemblage of friends of the deceased attended. Beautiful flowers were laid on the pretty casket. The pall bearers were Alphonse Davis, George Winters, Nathan Davis, H. H. Winters, William Bernard and J. J. McMahon. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery. The Daily Iberian, New Iberia, Louisiana, January 29, 1931
