Death
Mr. Philip S. Porter, 88, of Charlotte, died Thursday, December 25, 1997, at his residence. Funeral is 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Gerald Bledsoe, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. today at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Mr. Porter was born in Charlotte, the son of the late Samuel Beatty Porter and Adeline Fisher Porter. He retired in 1975, after 39 years as a Bus Driver, having begun his career as a trolley car operator. Following his retirement, he was employed at Pipe and Boiler Insulation Company. Mr. Porter was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder and a Deacon, the Steele Creek Commnity Bible Class, the Fun Bunch, The Railroad Brotherhood and former Scoutmaster at Wilmore Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Surviving are, his wife of 62 years, Lucille Williamson Porter, of Charlotte; children, James Samuel Porter, of Charlotte, Phyllis Porter VanDerbeck of Concord and Pamela Porter Furr, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Melissa Porter Hamlett, James Daniel Causey, III, Randy Kent Milling, Jr. and Joshua Alexander VanDerbeck and brother, Floyd Porter of Charlotte. Memorials may be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
