Death
Maurice Edmond Coullard, age 85, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away Friday, September 28, 2018, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, due to a head injury from a fall in his garage. Maurice was born on December 10, 1932, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the son of the late Leo and Bertha (Ouellette) Coullard. On June 7, 1952, he married Dolly Rose Jones at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie. Maurice served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a cook at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Determined to earn his high school diploma, he returned to Sault High School and graduated with the class of 1974. Maurice worked as a mechanic and was a front-end specialist. He trained at Wolverine School of Mechanics and worked for over 20 years at Ted Caffey Chevrolet. He also worked at Canadian Tire and retired from Soo Motors. After retirement, he continued to work as an independent mechanic and with his son at Coullard's Body Shop. Maurice was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, and the American Legion Post #3. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family. He loved to build and repair things. He was known for his many additions to his house. Maurice could figure out how just about anything worked and was especially motivated when helping someone. Maurice loved babies and children and was especially good with all his grandchildren. He loved to do a sweet little jig with each grandbaby and they loved it as much as he did. He loved playing catch with the kids, taking them for rides on the four-wheeler, playing cribbage, and going fishing. Many grandkids were recipients of his excellent haircuts. He was also a very good cook and was well known for his Sunday morning breakfasts and especially his crepes. His cheerful whistling could be heard nearly every day, as he went about his tasks, always busy: cutting grass, brush hogging, fixing things in his garage, filling the bird feeders, watering the garden, building beautiful gifts, and baking bread with the love of his life. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, and we're all grateful for his generosity in helping diagnose a problem with our cars and household problems. Dad was a man of strong faith and convictions and Church was important to him. He volunteered making pasties for the Knights of Columbus for many years and took part in the tootsie roll drive every year. Maurice is survived by his wife: Dolly Coullard; six children: Maria Coullard of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Michele “Micky” (Kevin) Walker of Dafter, MI, Collette Coullard of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Jon (Anna) Coullard of Brimley, MI, Jill (Derick) Eitrem and Roger Coullard both of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; and 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister: Virginia (Bob) Carlson of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; and a brother: Clarence (Lucy) Coullard of Flushing, MI. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Lawrence (infant), Ernie, and Lawrence Coullard; a sister: Diane (infant) Coullard; and a granddaughter: Angela Coullard. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until the time of the service. Entombment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus.Endnotes
