Death
Richard Thomas Thompson, 93, of 3501 Medical Center Road, Danville, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in Danville Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 29, 1916, in the Sandy River Community, he was the son the late George Sam Thompson and Lora Ellen Fuller Thompson. He lived his entire life in Sandy River, was a graduate of Brosville High School and drove a school bus for the Brosville schools for a number of years. He worked at the ASCS office in Chatham and operated the Brosville Esso service station. He spent his entire life taking care of his family and retired as a well-known farmer. Mr. Thompson was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, a Charter Member of Brosville Volunteer Fire Department, and the Brosville Ruritan Club. Survivors include his wife, Madeline "Mutt" Oakes Thompson, of the residence; one daughter, Carol Fortner, of the residence; two grandchildren, Vicky Arrington, of Blairs, Steve Thompson and his wife, Cindy, of Sandy River; three great-grandchildren, Scott Thompson, Daniel Thompson, and Lauren Arrington; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Thomas Samuel Thompson; six sisters, Jessie Blair, Gracie Wood, Ruth Dunn, Gladys Webster, Mary Thompson and Edith Thompson; also by one brother, George "Buck" Irvin Thompson. He was the last surviving member of his generation. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 26, 2009, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James W. Dunn and the Rev. J. B. Baldridge.
