If I would have known, I would have tried to talk to you more at church instead of being afraid of you. I am honored to have known you. You were very good looking in that unform. God Bless you. I hope to see you at my time. Robin.

Family Friend: To Honor and Remember My Childhood Friend Doug, I know you're in Heaven and reunited with your wonderful parents, Red and Foy, but I have never forgotten you and all the wonderful childhood memories, your love for baseball and Red, but most of all for your country, your fellow Marines, and your love for the Lo...rd. You were several years older than me but when my family visited yours, you always had time to share with me. How I loved your pastoral home in Hickory, NC! I know one of the last things you said to your Dad was if you didn't see him again, you'd see him in Heaven. You gave your life trying to save your wounded men, pulling them out of the line of fire. No greater love can be shown! Semper Fi! My Beloved Friend! Eugenia Jolly Bambas, 211 East Springs Rd, Columbia, SC 29223, ebambas@gmail.com

Edwin (Doug) Connell was my cousin. We served a tour of duty together on the USS Independence, which went to Vietnam in 1965. He was with Ships Company in the Marines and I was with the Fighter Squadron VF-84. Later in his enlistment, he requested shore duty in Vietnam, as he was very proud to serve his country. Doug was a dedicated Marine and believed in his country and was proud to serve his country. For this reason, Doug requested to serve a ground tour in Vietnam and lost his life there. Doug's father was a Southern Baptist Minister and I never saw Doug be anything but a Christian in his actions. Nelson Lee, 2704 Pennsylvania Ave, Kannapolis, NC 28083, nleesr@aol.com.

He was the son of Reverend and Mrs Lloyd V Connell, Route #7, Box 798, Hickory, NC.

He served with Foxtrot Company, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd MAF.

He was awarded The Combat Action Ribbon(CAR), The Purple Heart Medal and One Gold Star for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
