LEIGH C. FAIRBANK, BRIGADIER GENERAL, MEDICAL DEPARTMENT (DENTAL CORPS)
A native of Michigan, General Fairbank entered the service as Acting Dental Surgeon, May 11, 1914, with station at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, was appointed Dental Surgeon, U. S. Army, in 1916 and Major, Dental Corps, in 1917. He served a tour of duty in the Philippines and China from 1916 to 1919. Returning to the States, he was assigned to U. S. Army General Hospital No. 2T (now Fitzsimons General Hospital), and, has subsequently served tours of duty at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Sam Houston, St. Louis University, and again at Fort Leavenworth, coming to the General Dispensary, U. S. Army, Washington, D. C., in 1935, where he was on duty as Chief of the Dental Service at the time of his appointment. General Fairbank received his D. D. S. degree from George-town University in 1912, is a graduate of the Dewey School of Orthodontia and of the Army Dental School (1914). The first officer of the Army Dental Corps to receive such recognition, he was awarded a certificate of membership by the American Board of Orthodontia in 1936. His appointment by the President and confirmation by the Senate on March 4, 1938, as assistant to The Surgeon General with rank of brigadier general, marks the first time an officer of the Dental Corps has attained the rank of General officer. General Fairbank has been assigned to duty in the Office of The Surgeon General as Chief of the Dental Division.
