Mrs. Mary Jane Hartsell (Almond) Furr, 87, of Albemarle, NC, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Stanly Manor. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Stanly Funeral & Cremation Care in Albemarle. Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 2 pm at Bethany Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David Cochran, Rev. Jeff Sweeney, Rev. Stephen Lee, and Rev. Jim Pyatt. Burial to follow in the Bethany Methodist Church Cemetery. Known by many simply as Mary Jane or “Mom,” Mrs. Furr was born March 25, 1936, in Oakboro, Stanly County, to the late James Monroe and Cornelia Smith Hartsell. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Bruce Furr, in 1989; and her first husband, Sidney A. Almond, in 2019. She is also predeceased by sisters Ramelle Efird and Gladys Yow of Albemarle, and Ruby Neal “Teen” Crisco of the Oakboro community. Mrs. Furr is lovingly survived by her son Rod Almond and wife Kelly B. Almond of Rockwell, NC; her daughter, Rhonda A. Hughes of Albemarle, NC; son Rick Almond of Albemarle, NC; and sister, Mrs. Joyce H. Little of Oakboro. She is also survived by a grandson, Hunter Hughes of Albemarle; brother-in-law Ben Furr and wife Tempie of Cary, NC; stepchildren Dean, Donna, David, and Doug (and their respective spouses and children); nieces Sandra Edwin, Rita Crisco, Sonja Young and Suzanne Mariscano; and nephews Dennis Efird, Barry Yow, and Mark Crisco. A retired bookkeeper for All Star Mills in Albemarle, Mary Jane was a faithful member of Bethany United Methodist Church until her health declined. She was her Sunday School Treasurer for fifty plus years, and truly loved all church gatherings. “Mom” really loved spending time with family at Holidays. She is best known by her family as the most loving and caring Mother and Grandmother of all time. Mrs. Furr was passionate about cooking, gardening, and canning, and always had a place at her table for you to join her for a meal. She believed in feeding everyone! In fact, her personal ministry was feeding people with her home cooked meals, including bereaved families, new ministers, and homesick Boy Scout camp staff! Amazingly, she could and often did prepare banquet meals for dozens of folks at one time, and it always tasted just as good as the meals she produced in her own kitchen. One of her homemade cakes or pies was always a welcome treat to the lucky recipient! In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 2411 US-52, Albemarle, NC 28001. Stanly Funeral & Cremation Care of Albemarle is serving the Almond/Furr family.Endnotes
