Death

Hoyle Helms, Jr. Mr. Helms, age 79, of Charlotte, died March 11, 2008 at Britthaven of Charlotte. Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Reverends Steve Bass, Dave Luther and John Gordy will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery with Fire Department Honors. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM at the church prior to the service. Mr. Helms was retired from the Charlotte Fire Department as a Firefighter Engineer with 25 years of service and was a Navy War Veteran. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature and his Rocky Top Cabin in Highland County, VA. Mr. Helms was born in Charlotte December 20, 1928, son of the late Hoyle Helms, Sr. and Athenae Furr Helms. Surviving are his wife, of 55 years, Carolyn Cathey Helms; son, Mike Helms; daughter, Cathy Helms Schulte and husband, Scott all of Charlotte; daughter, Susan Rose and husband, Jeff of Mooresville, NC; sister, Betty Harpe of Cheraw, SC; brother, Billy Helms and wife, Vivian of Star, NC and sister, Betty Gibson and husband, Jerald; six grandchildren, Elisabeth (Bobby), Rebecca (Matthew), Brittany, Cassady, Ryan; and Sax and three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special appreciation to Nancy, Craig, Mimi, and the rest of the staff at Britthaven and Community Home Care and Hospice.
