Shelby — Mr. William “Bill” C. Palmer, 85, of 604 Peach Street, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at White Oak Manor. FUNERAL: Monday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church Burial: Sunset Cemetery. VISITATION: The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home PERSONAL HISTORY: A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Oscar O. Palmer Sr. and Mayme Beam Palmer. Mr. Palmer is a graduate from Shelby High School, Brevard College, and Wake Forest University. He is a Veteran of Army Air Force WWII in the private attached 55th Training Group. He retired after 17 years as personnel director and public relations director at J.P. Stevens Co. and formerly worked for 18 years as personnel director for Hudson Hosiery Mill. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Hoey Bible Class. He served on the board of directors of Shelby Savings Bank, he ws vice president of Shelby Chamber Of Commerce, board of directors of the City Of Shelby Parks & Recreation board, board of directors of Council on Aging, organized the Cleveland County Senior Golf Assoc. He also served on the board of Cleveland County Social services, and volunteer and board member of the Cleveland County Chapter of the American Red Cross. PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: In addition to his parents, his first wife, Kathryn Furr Palmer and brother Oscar O. Palmer Jr. SURVIVORS: Wife, Doris Baugham Palmer; stepsons Robert M. Baugham and wife Billie of Shelby and Mark P. Baugham of West Jefferson; daughters, Mary Kathy Palmer Speight and husband Gerald Speight Jr. of Raleigh; grandchildren, Cheryl Speight and husband Clarence Wilson III.
