Death

Rose Marie Melton Stewart, 87, passed away on Thursday. Through the tender, loving mercy of our Heavenly Father, she joined her mother, father, five brothers and two sisters in the Heavenly Kingdom. She was the daughter of the late William Penn Melton and Georgia S. Boone Melton. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday at Apex United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Wallace, NC. In 1947, Marie graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC and in 1981, she received her diploma from the Institute of Children's Literature. Marie was very active in her career as a secretary; in her church services and in her volunteer work in the public schools. She enjoyed writing poetry and received a Golden Poet Award for her poem entitled "Patience" in 1990. She often wrote short stories and poetry for her grandchildren and Sunday School students. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and niece. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Nathaniel B. Stewart; son, Robert H. Stewart; daughter, Laura Renee Stewart; grandchildren, Richard D. Furr, Jr., David Stewart Furr, Laura Parker Furr and Nicole Stewart Hart and her husband, Alex Hart ; great-grandson, Jacob Hart; as well as several nieces and nephews. Flowers will be gratefully received or donations may be made to a favorite charity.
