Death
Nathaniel Bennett Stewart, 89, died Monday. Born in Wallace, NC, he was the son of the late Horace and Elizabeth Stewart. Nat graduated from Clement High School in Wallace, NC, Class of 1945. He enlisted in the Army and attended Clemson University and Virginia Military Institute before going into active duty. After his discharge, he enrolled at NC State University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While at NC State, he was elected into membership in Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Later in 1950, he was recalled for service in the Army during the Korean War and served as an instructor at the Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, VA. Nat enjoyed a 40 year career as an electrical engineer with CP&L, retiring in 1990 as an executive. He and his wife enjoyed many years together teaching 5th and 6th grade Sunday School. In addition, Nat served as a Deacon and Elder at churches in Raleigh and Asheville. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday at Apex United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Wallace, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie Stewart; brothers, Horace and Jesse Stewart; four sisters, Mary Emma Hawes, Martha Powell, Leila Baldwin and Susie Stewart. Survivors include his son, Robert H. Stewart, daughter, Laura Renee Stewart; grandchildren, Nicole Stewart Hart and husband, Alex, Richard D. Furr, Jr., David Stewart Furr, Laura Parker Furr; great grandchildren, Jacob Hart, Winston Hart and several nieces and nephews; close friends, Sandra Mayes, James F. Devine, Jr. and many more as well. Flowers will be gratefully received or donations may be made to The Marines, Toys for Tots program. Online condolences may be directed to bryan-leefuneralhome.com.
