Death
Rev. James Colin (J. C.) Mitchell, of Columbus, MS, died May 4, 2015 after an extended illness. He was 86 years old. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 10am-12pm at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A funeral service will follow at 12pm in the Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tommy Mitchell officiating. Interment will be Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 12pm at Juniper Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Poplarville, MS with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Rev. Mitchell was born April 3, 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents Elis and Mary Edna Furr Mitchell; His sisters – Edna Earle Legget, Eunice Marie Mitchell, Sarah Maxine Mitchell, Elaine Moody, Eva Nell Burgess, and Ella Yvonne Adams. His brothers – E. J. Mitchell, William Eugene (Bill) Mitchell, and Harry B. Mitchell; one granddaughter, Jennifer Mitchell Edington, of Pontotoc, MS and one son-in-law Harold Thomas of Columbus, MS. Rev. Mitchell was a much beloved minister of the Gospel. His most recent place of ministry was as the Associational Director of Missions for the Golden Triangle Baptist Association in Columbus, MS He retired there after 18 years of service in 1994. He had also previously served as the Director of Missions for the Pontotoc Baptist Association in Pontotoc, MS. His previous ministry also included pastorates in North Mississippi, including, Tillatoba Baptist Church, Endville Baptist Church, Ingomar Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Saltillo, MS He served in ministry for over 60 years. Rev. Mitchell was known for his love for the Word of God and prayer. He memorized many passages of Scripture and loved to quote from memory the book of Jonah! In the 1960s, he served as the Dean of the Black Baptist Seminary in Tupelo, MS. In his retirement, Rev. Mitchell continued to serve churches as Interim Pastor and enjoyed working and gardening outdoors. Rev. Mitchell is survived by his wife Laura Margaret Mills Mitchell. They were married for 66 ½ years. He is also survived by his children: Laura Mitchell Thomas of Columbus, MS; Marcia Mitchell of Phoenix, AZ; Ralph (Pat) Mitchell of Pontotoc, MS; and Dr. Tommy (Andrea) Mitchell of Lucedale, MS. Rev. Mitchell is also survived by one sister, Mary Ann Mitchell Gunter of Gonzales, LA, 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ralph Mitchell, Philip Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, Drew Mitchell, James Fults, Daniel Russell, Dalton Capps, and Tommy Mitchell.Endnotes
