Death
CONCORD Fred Ketner Carriker, 79, of Concord, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the Tucker Hospice House after a brief illness. He was born April 19, 1935, in Cabarrus County, a son of the late William Pinkney and Mattie Mae Furr Carriker. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Adam, William, John and Hubert Carriker; and three sisters, Mary Lou Brines, Helen Cook and Francis Carriker. Fred graduated from Concord High School in 1953. After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Wingate College and later transferred to the University of Texas. After fulfilling his educational requirements he became a math and business professor at the University of Texas and Houston Community College. Following his teaching career he was the owner and operator of Ketner and Company, a wood restoration and marble company. Fred retired in 1998 and returned to North Carolina to spend the remainder of his life with his family. He is survived by a sister, Minnie Viola Childers, of Kannapolis; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Private services will be held for Mr. Carriker.
